If you’re like most people, you don’t see the missing limbs, the eye patches, the hooks for hands, you just see a pirate. Wouldn’t it be nice if that’s how we all saw people living with a disability, as just a person living? You see pirates would be considered “disabled” by today’s standards, but they weren’t excluded from work opportunities, they weren’t stared at, or ignored, or praised for doing simple tasks. They were just pirates getting on with living their pirate lives. That’s what Pirate Day is all about - Stop seeing the disability and start seeing the person and their abilities. So let’s get everybody to dress as pirates and just be pirates for a day. Come to work or school, stay home or go to the gym, but …dress as a Pirate for a day on 1st December.
